I will post the biodiversity SMART file under news in our D2L shell. Remember, in order to open a SMART file at home, you need to go into the Cougar Community shell on D2L then scroll down (way down) to March or May of 2012 to see the instructions that Mr. Moses wrote.
Hope this helps with your prep...

D2L malfunction at the junction
Mr. Perritt and I have identified the problem on D2L with the online textbooks...we will sort it out tomorrow.
Please solve the double cylinder question for tomorrow. If the graphic organizer from today is helpful, great...please use it!! Remember, you have a Math check in on composite surface area on Friday. Nothing major...just a couple of questions to work through.
Science quiz is Thursday...ensure that you are reviewing your notes & making those big connections. If you didn't come to class with your web done, you missed a bunch of feedback & missed the opportunity to hear the perspectives of others. Think about that awesome audio lice clip that we listened to today in class (from CBC) and think about all the connections already to our curriculum...so awesome!!!

Humanities
Hello 903... I now know the secret to a successful Humanities class..chocolate!!! :-)
Today for homework: all work in your journal please
- think about and reply to the following in your journals:
.....if you can dream it, you can accomplish it.
.....if you believe you can, you will.
.....Do you believe in the power of positive thinking?
- review Stuart McLean's article "The Adventurous Life of John Goddard"
- find and identify at least 3 pieces of advice that John Goddard gives about setting and achieving goals. Then give a brief explanation about what you choose those pieces of advice, why what he says is important to you or what those nuggets of advice mean to you or how they reflect the choices you make or the goals you set.....

Welcome to Government and Democracy! (check out the video again)
- beef up your notes in your journal
• What is the role of government?
• What types of governments exist around the world?
• How do other forms of government compare to democracy?
• What are some key principles of democracy?
• Why is democracy important?
HOMEWORK:
Principals of Democracy - you and your buddy(ies) have ONE principal that you are responsible for
- you are to familiarize yourself with your principle and design a brief presentation to inform the rest of the class about the principle. Students can design a poster, symbol or graphic, create a skit, or provide actual examples that demonstrate the principle working or not working.

Make a
list of five to ten people in your life--real people like family, friends,
neighbors, community members, public figures (celebrities, singers, athletes),
and fictional characters from books, television or movies - - who have
influenced or inspired you in some way positively or negatively. Try to include
at least one person you feel may have influenced you negatively. At least three
of these people should be literary characters. Following
each character or person in your list, identify the main values each stands for
in your mind. How do you think this person or character sees life? What
does she or he stand for? (To help you get started, respond to your
choice of the questions below.) Which
characters or people do you know have gone through a change in values? Compare
the causes of these changes, if you know them. What conditions and forces do
you think cause a person’s vision of life and, thereby, values to change?

Here are the analysis questions if you need:
1. Are there any similarities between the graphs?
2. Can you explain the shapes of the graphs?

Humanities
Hi everyone,
You did great work today with understanding some of our big concepts in Social Studies. See the pictures below and cross reference with your notes (journal work and yellow handout). We will discuss these tomorrow and prep for writing a critical response.
Also, we read "If" by Rudyard Kipling and began work on analyzing the poem.

Also, we read "If" by Rudyard Kipling and began work on analyzing the poem.
“If” consists of
advice given by a father to his son on what it means to “be a Man”. Various
attributes are listed including: self-belief, patience, truthfulness, kindness
and modesty. The advice is presented in a series of statements each beginning
with the conditional word “if”. Each statement
contains a pair of opposites which build up into a strong guide as to how the
father feels life should be lived.
Tomorrow we will further our conversation and add to the work on your own Creed. See the handout from today (make sure it goes into your journals) to give you a heads up as to what we will be discussing tomorrow.
Math & Science
There will be a quick Math check in on Wednesday covering line & rotational symmetry.
Variation labs are due for Thursday please. Please ensure that you are putting in the effort to create histograms that are clear, labeled, titled, easy to read. Please paste these in your journals & answer the analysis questions on page 9.

Have a great weekend
Please finish up your critical thinking responses for Monday...no more than 30 minutes of work this weekend please. Just want to read your thoughts!

Pancake Breakfast in the Morning!!!!
Great classes today!!
We reviewed line symmetry & moved into the order of rotation for a variety of shapes.
You will have a critical thinking response to complete tomorrow in class. Please just mull it over tonight..
We know approximately 13% of species on Earth...
If more money is made by getting medicine from trees, then why are trees still used for agricultural purposes? And why are they still being cut down?

Humanities
We have just started our CREED unit. Creed comes from the Latin word Credo which means "I believe". At the end of our unit, students will create a their own Creed via a project of their choosing...more information related to this will come next week. Throughout this unit we will view videos, read short stories, poems and articles, as well as many discussions.
Questions that students have begun to work on... (minimum of 3 answered in journals...)
1. What is my creed?
2. How does my creed impact my life?
3. How do outside forces affect my creed?
4. Do we have conscious control over it or are we a product of our environment?
5. Where did my creed come from?
6. Does my creed stay the same or change over time?
7. Can a creed be sold or bought?
8. Can you/how will you defend your creed?
9. How will you fulfill it?

Today in Science we started some notes on biodiversity. What is it? What does it look like?
In Math, we reviewed line symmetry & pushed into rotational symmetry.
Please get your forms & fees into the school...thanks.
If you have your old Hum journal, please rip out the papers so you can use it for Science this year...thanks.

Math & Science check in
Hi Everybody,
Awesome work today in Math & Science. Please take a look at the biodiversity intro activity feedback that you received on your rubrics & think about where you would like to move toward this year. I thought your feedback was insightful & constructive.
We introduced the concepts of line symmetry today in Math. A copy of my SMART file was given with examples. Take a moment to draw in the lines of symmetry that you can see. We will review them tomorrow & push forward.
Remember to bring in your forms asap.
Please ensure that you have the Hilroy notebooks for Math & I will work towards trying to get visual journals for you for Science. In the meantime, no loose paper in Science or Math please. You need a glue stick in your pencil cases.
Thanks for the great start up...it has been so smooth! What an awesome group!

- Why Read?
- Why am I reading this book? (why did you choose the book you signed out?)
- What do I already know about the book, the author, the theme...(look for clues...title, summary, etc)
- What details do I think the author will include in the the text...make PREDICTIONS.
2. Writing task to be completed in journals... What does HAPPY look like?
- at least a paragraph of writing is required (this means you have 1 introductory sentence, at least 3 detail sentences, and 1 concluding sentence)
- you may have more writing :-)
- you may create lists or word webs...you may include pictures/visuals/drawings
- borders and/or backgrounds are ALWAYS a good idea when working in your journals
